Prosecutors Close Case on Sobchak

Former St. Petersburg mayor Anatoly Sobchak said prosecutors have closed their corruption investigation against him.

The case against Sobchak - who was accused of accepting a luxury apartment as a bribe - was opened as he was running for re-election in 1996. He claimed that the charges were fabricated. The liberal Sobchak lost the election by a narrow margin.

Speaking at a news conference Friday, Sobchak said he had received a copy of an order issued by the Prosecutor General's Office closing the case against him.

While the investigation was pending, Sobchak was taken to a hospital with what was said to be a heart ailment in October 1997 and then was flown to Paris where he received more treatment. He returned in July of this year.

Sobchak criticized the police for pursuing the case. "We can await a real fight against crime only after we make real reforms in law enforcement," he said.
