Population Declining

MOSCOW -- Russia's population has continued to plunge, decreasing by 0.4 percent over the first nine months of the year, the State Statistics Committee reported Friday.

The population fell by 579,000 and stood at 145.7 million as of Oct. 1, the committee said, according to Interfax.

Worsening economic conditions, increased alcoholism among men and poor medical standards have all contributed to the slide. The decrease would be even sharper if not for an influx of immigrants, mainly ethnic Russians coming from other former Soviet republics.
