Poor Grain Harvest

MOSCOW -- Russian 1999 grain output reached 54.5 million metric tons clean weight as of Monday, a spokesman for the Agriculture Ministry said.

This compared with a total of 47.8 million metric tons last year, the lowest figure in over 40 years, and the spokesman said the figure may rise slightly. Russian grain demand is around 70 million to 75 million tons per year and last year's poor harvest has meant that stocks are extremely depleted.
