Platinum Deficit Stands

JOHANNESBURG, South Africa -- South African mines will only partly offset restricted Russian platinum-group-metals exports and a supply deficit will persist in 1999, Johnson Matthey said in its interim review released Tuesday.

Matthey forecast South Africa's 1999 platinum supply at 3.82 million ounces versus 3.68 million last year, spearheaded by increased output from the world's biggest platinum producer Anglo American Platinum Corp.

Russian platinum supplies, curtailed since December, were forecast to hit a sharply lower 800,000 ounces from 1.3 million.
