Nuclear Leak Found

KIEV -- Officials at a Ukrainian nuclear power plant shut down a reactor Thursday after a leak was noted in its cooling system, but no increase in radiation levels was recorded, the Emergency Situations Ministry said.

A ministry duty officer identifying himself as Colonel Patsenko said the leak was noticed in the afternoon at the Khmelnitsky plant in western Ukraine.

"The reactor was switched off from the electricity network and it is being shut down," he said by telephone. "This is not an accident, but rather what would be described as an incident. Levels of radioactivity at the station have undergone no change."
