No China-WTO Pact

BEIJING -- U.S. Trade Representative Charlene Barshefsky briefly met Chinese officials Friday after saying she had made no progress on Beijing's bid to enter the World Trade Organization and that time was running out.

Neither side gave any immediate indication on whether the latest meeting had produced movement, and it was not clear whether Barshefsky's negative comments were a part of a negotiating posture.

She held about 90 minutes of talks with Chinese Minister of Foreign Trade Shi Guangsheng on Friday afternoon.

"We came hoping to make progress," Barshefsky said in a statement issued in Beijing and Washington earlier Friday, as time ticked away toward, a Nov. 30 WTO meeting in Seattle to launch a new round of global trade talks.
