Lesin Detained by Traffic Cops

Press Minister Mikhail Lesin was hauled in by traffic police over the weekend for driving what they claimed was a "hot" Toyota Land Cruiser, Russian media reported.

The minister was detained by two traffic officers Sunday after he was stopped for driving through a red light. The officers waved aside Lesin's documents proclaiming his special status as a minister when a routine check found that his car was on the priority search list for nonpayment of thousands of dollars in customs duties, the daily Segodnya reported.

Lesin was detained for 15 minutes at the Begovoi police station until the officers' shocked superiors were informed of the incident and ordered his immediate release, the newspaper said.

The traffic police refused to comment on the incident Tuesday.

Lesin has sent off an inquiry to the head of the State Customs Committee, Mikhail Vanin, to sort out whether he is in fact in possession of a car for which customs tariffs have not been paid, his aide Yelena Kalaur said Tuesday. Kalaur said that to the minister's knowledge, he was all paid up.

The two officers will face a stiff dressing-down for detaining him, she added.
