Hopes High for Tu-214

MOSCOW -- The Kazan plane factory, or KAPO, hopes to receive certification for its new Tu-214 plane early next year, the company's chief designer said Tuesday.

"Tu-214s will replace aging Tu-154s, Tu-134s and Ilyushin 62s. They are already being produced by the Kazan plane factory," Yury Vorobyov said. He expected certification early next year on the Tu-214, designed for commercial flights in Russia and on international routes.

The Tu-214, which carries 210 passengers or 30 metric tons of cargo, is now being tested in the United Arab Emirates and Iran and will undergo further tests at sub-zero temperatures in Russia in late November.

Vorobyov said his company had already received orders for Tu-214s from Tatarstan and Sibir airlines as well as from foreign companies which use Tu-154s. "The domestic demand for Tu-214s is seen at 500 planes and foreign demand at 200," he said. The Tu-214, with two engines produced by Russia's Perm Motors, has a flight range of 6,400 kilometers.
