Deal Reached on Beef

PARIS -- France has reached a provisional accord with Britain that would allow it to lift its ban on British beef, although a few more details must be worked out, French Farm Minister Jean Glavany said Tuesday.

Glavany also told the National Assembly at question time that the French government would soon ask its food safety agency AFSSA for advice before making a decision on whether to lift the embargo in accordance with EU law.

Glavany said progress had been made at resolving all five of the areas of concern that France had regarding the lifting of its ban on British beef, which it had maintained amid fears the meat was not safe from mad cow disease.

He also said France had obtained a European Commission guarantee that would allow every member state to demand that British beef be labeled for consumer purposes.
