A minute from the Mayakovskaya metro station, just out of sight of some of Moscow's bar and restaurant glitterati, is a quieter, in many ways much nicer, place. Efesus, not a Turkish restaurant despite what its name suggests, is one of Tverskaya's most inviting haunts.

Efesus recently cut back its hours and now closes at midnight. Nevertheless, on most evenings, you will find a mixed crowd in for dinner and drinks. Efesus also has live music Tuesday through Friday - usually quiet jazz that does not overwhelm patrons who actually want to have a conversation.

The first floor, where the bar is located, is inviting and warm with cream-colored walls. There are more tables in the basement, which is painted a rich, dark orange. Efesus could be accused of actually having a hip interior if it weren't for the fact that its hipness seems so inadvertent. It's just a nice place to hang out.

Efesus easily has one of the nicest staffs in Moscow. The importance of this cannot be overstated when choosing a good watering hole. It's nice to visit a place where it's not unheard of that a manager, waiter or even owner pulls a chair up to your table to join you for a drink or a cigarette.

The price of a large draft beer at Efeses starts at 60 rubles. Vodka starts at 50 rubles. The food is plentiful, though hardly haute cuisine, and entrees cost an average of 200 rubles. On weekdays, business lunches are 95 rubles.

Efesus is a rare commodity in Moscow: unpretentious and welcoming. It is, however, too well-hidden, which probably explains its only mediocre success. To get there, you'll have to sneak past the working girls and the hoods waiting for them in their cars, but big deal. Efesus is still the best hangout in the neighborhood.

Efesus is located at 2/3 Tverskaya-Yamskaya Ulitsa. Metro Mayakovskaya. Tel. 251-0951. 9:00 a.m. until midnight. Credit Cards: V, MC.
