China in WTO Talks

BEIJING -- Top U.S. and Chinese negotiators talked for about one hour Thursday on China's entry into the World Trade Organization, a U.S. official said.

It was not clear whether the brevity of the meeting signaled progress or that further snags had arisen in make-or-break talks to get China into the trade body before its 134 members meet in Seattle on Nov. 30 to launch a new global trade round.

The U.S. team, headed by Trade Representative Charlene Barshefsky, met a Chinese team led by Foreign Trade Minister Shi Guangsheng, a U.S. official said.

The meeting followed technical level talks that stretched through the night and well into Thursday.

The latest round of negotiations started Wednesday.
