Allstate to Slash Jobs

NEW YORK -- Allstate Corp., the No. 2 property-casualty insurer in the United States, said it would cut 4,000 non-agent jobs, or 10 percent of its non-agent work force, as part of a plan to cut costs by $600 million a year.

The plan announced Wednesday also calls for the transfer of 6,500 fully employed agents to a freelance contract.

Most of the money saved will be reinvested in computer systems to unite Allstate's telephone, Internet and agency selling operations.
