Airlines Hike Airfares

DALLAS -- Air travelers are watching to see whether other major airlines would match leisure and business fare increases by American Airlines and Delta Air Lines.

Blaming higher jet fuel prices, American, the nation's No. 2 carrier, raised its fares 3 percent across the board Monday. Delta, the No. 3 carrier, soon followed. A spokesman for Delta said the Atlanta-based airline raised fares to remain competitive.

Industry leader United Air Lines, along with Northwest and Continental, did not immediately match the fare hike. Chicago-based United and Houston-based Continental Airlines all said they were studying their fares late Tuesday. Minneapolis-based Northwest said it was not matching the price hike. The newest increase came just six weeks after a Continental-led move to raise leisure fares $10 to $20 each way.
