WHAT IS TO BE DONE?

Sip Coffee at Opera

For those who like their opera a little light - perhaps with a dash of cream - check out Coffee Cantata, a 40-minute production of Bach's comic opera. To further entice non-traditional opera fans, 20 to 30 audience members at each performance get to share coffee with the singers. Performances are Wednesday and Thursday at 7 and 8:30 p.m. at the Helikon Opera, 19 Bolshaya Nikitskaya. Nearest metro: Pushkinskaya. Tel. 290-0971/5835.

Romances With the Slavs

But if opera in any form is not your style, how about some traditional Slavic tunes? Russian Melancholy, presented at Okolo, the Theater Near the Stanislavsky House, is an unusual theatricalized concert of Russian and Ukrainian folk songs and romances featuring Natalya Rozhkova. The performance starts Wednesday at 7 p.m. at 9 Voznesensky Pereulok. Nearest metro: Pushkinskaya. Tel. 290-2557.

Tsar's Estate at Izmailovo

While heading up that well-worn path to the souvenir hell/mecca that is Izmailovo, try veering off to the right toward one of Moscow's loveliest green spaces before it becomes one of Moscow's largest white spaces. Izmailovsky Park has not only the usual accouterments of Moscow parks but also the remains of a tsarist estate and hunting lodge that includes the stunning Cathedral of the Intercession. Nearest metro: Izmailovskaya or Izmailovsky Park.
