Unity to Go It Alone

MOSCOW -- The Unity bloc will not team up with Our Home Is Russia for December's parliamentary elections because Our Home's conditions for a partnership are unacceptable, Unity said in a statement reported Friday by Interfax.

Unity, a newly formed movement of regional leaders, is headed by Emergency Situations Minister Sergei Shoigu.

Unity's organizing committee said the bloc has two principles on which it cannot compromise, Interfax reported. First, the bloc argues that only provincial deputies, not Moscow-based parties or politicians can defend regional interests, and second, Unity does not plan to follow any specific ideology. The committee said that Our Home's conditions threatened both of these principles.
