Ukraine to Sell Land

KIEV -- The Kiev city administration has decided to put municipal land in the Ukrainian capital on sale, officials said Monday.

Ukraine, with its half-hearted reforms since the Soviet collapse in 1991, has failed to introduce free sale of farm land, considered to be a major indicator of economic change. Such a move is widely opposed by the mostly leftist parliament.

But in January, President Leonid Kuchma used his additional powers to issue a decree allowing the sale of municipal land not being used for farming.
