Tajik Explosion

DUSHANBE, Tajikistan -- A bomb ripped through a department store in the capital of Tajikistan on Monday, wounding at least three people. No one has claimed responsibility for the explosion, which came amid rising political tension.

The explosion shattered all the windows in the building, located just a few hundred meters from the residence of President Emomali Rakhmonov. The bombing coincided with a leading Islamic opposition group walking out of a national reconciliation commission that was set up under a 1997 agreement that ended a five-year civil war in the former Soviet republic.

The United Tajik Opposition, Tajikistan's main opposition group, suspended its work on the commission Monday after the government refused to put off next month's presidential election.
