Shutov Will Run

MOSCOW -- A lawmaker jailed on suspicion of arranging several contract killings intends to run for the State Duma in December, a news report said Friday.

Yury Shutov served in the St. Petersburg city legislature before being jailed in February on suspicion of involvement in at least three killings of businessmen and politicians.

Despite his legal problems, Shutov hopes to move up to the national legislature in December elections, Interfax reported.

He plans to run for a seat in St. Petersburg against two of the country's more prominent politicians, former Prime Minister Sergei Stepashin and Gennady Seleznyov, the speaker of the Duma, parliament's lower house.

Shutov is currently being held at a jail outside St. Petersburg, the report said.
