Russia Considers Japan's Aid Request

Russia said Friday it was considering a request for nuclear cleanup gear from Japan to help deal with the after-effects of the country's worst nuclear accident.

"There has been such a request from Japan, the issue is being discussed at the Nuclear Power Ministry, and most likely, it will be decided positively," a ministry spokesman said.

"As far as I understand, they want protective kits and suits from us," the spokesman said.

Japan has also asked the United States, Russia and several West European countries for information on how to deal with nuclear accidents after Thursday's explosion at a uranium processing plant exposed at least 55 people to radiation.

The spokesman said a decision would probably be made later Friday.

U.S. Energy Secretary Bill Richardson, who is visiting Russia, said earlier that Washington and Moscow had offered to send a joint team of experts and robots to help in the cleanup, but that there had been no response as yet from Japan.
