Reactor Shut Down

MOSCOW -- A reactor at the Nuclear Reactor Research Institute in Dimitrovgrad, about 700 kilometers southeast of Moscow, was shut down by its safety system while performing an experiment but no radiation was released, Interfax reported Tuesday.

"No products of fission were emitted either inside or outside the reactor," Interfax said, citing a prepared statement from the institute. In 1997, an engineer at the institute was exposed to a significant dose of radiation in an incident that the Nuclear Power Ministry blamed on "gross violation of safety rules."
