Presidents Meet

BAKU, Azerbaijan -- The presidents of Azerbaijan and Armenia met Monday to discuss the two nations' dispute over the Nagorny Karabakh region that erupted into war 11 years ago.

The two leaders have held several meetings recently to try to end the deadlock over the region that has poisoned their relations since the collapse of the former Soviet Union.

"The presidents noted that for a peaceful settlement it is necessary for both sides to take a constructive position in the name of national interests and make mutual compromises," said a statement from the Azeri state news agency.
