Oil Leaks to Gulf

MOSCOW -- Oil-trapping vessels have cleaned up oil that spilled in the Neva River near St. Petersburg when a tanker ran aground, but some has escaped into the Gulf of Finland, Itar-Tass said Monday.

About 30 metric tons of heavy fuel oil spilled from the tanker after Saturday's accident, by preliminary estimates.

Investigators said members of the crew might have been drunk when the tanker, named Nefterudovoz 7, ran aground. The tanker caught on an underwater shoal after the crew failed to notice navigation signs in clear weather, the Volga Balt State Waterways Agency said.

The work on the Neva was completed late Monday, the agency said, adding that clean-up efforts in the Gulf of Finland would continue.
