Minsk March Banned

MINSK, Belarus -- Belarussian authorities have banned a memorial walk from Minsk to a mass grave dating from the Stalinist era, located in a forest outside town, Interfax reported Monday.

Members of Belarus' main opposition political party, the Belarus National Front, have made the walk a traditional form of commemorating the mass slayings at the end of October. This year's march was scheduled for Oct. 31.

But Minsk city officials said they fear another violent clash with police, as occurred at an opposition protest Oct. 17.

The march to Kuropaty - an annual event since 1988 - has taken on an anti-government tinge in recent years.
