Military Cuts Planned

MOSCOW -- The Defense Ministry will dismiss thousands of generals, admirals and colonels as part of belt-tightening efforts in the cash-strapped military, a news report said Friday.

The ministry plans to cut the number of generals and admirals from 1,500 to 1,200 by the end of the year, Interfax reported, citing a Defense Ministry spokesman.

The biggest cuts will come among colonels: only 20,000 out of a current 37,000 will remain, the spokesman said.

The military has been slashed from 4.6 million servicemen in the late 1980s to a current 1.2 million. Even with the reductions, the government hasn't been able to properly fund the armed forces, which suffer from abysmal living conditions and a lack of training.
