Latvia Arrests Agent

RIGA, Latvia -- Latvian police Friday arrested a former Soviet security agent suspected of participating in mass deportations in the 1940s, the Baltic News Service said.

Janis Kirsteins, 72, was charged with genocide. He is the third person indicted on similar charges this month.

There have been two genocide convictions in Latvia, a former Soviet republic that gained independence from Moscow in 1991 after five decades of occupation.
