Kazakh Poll Continues

MOSCOW -- A second round of voting for a new parliament in Kazakhstan will be held next week because some candidates failed to get the required number of votes, Itar-Tass reported Sunday.

Kazakhstan's Central Election Commission announced the results of Oct. 10's election, and said that only 20 candidates received the required number of votes to win a seat in the new parliament, or Majlis, the report said.

There will be 77 seats in the parliament, with 10 reserved for political parties. The remaining 67 seats were to be filled by independent candidates.

Commission chief Zagipa Baliyeva said 547 candidates competed for the 67 individual seats in last Sunday's election. A total of 94 received enough votes to take part in the second round of balloting next Sunday, she said, Itar-Tass reported.
