Indian Tea Imports Fall

MOSCOW -- Imports of Indian tea are likely to drop this year by 10 to 15 percent to between 80,000 and 90,000 tons from 103,000 tons in 1998, T.K. Chakraborty, the head of India's Tea Board in Moscow, said Tuesday.

Total Russian tea imports were likely to fall from 150,000 metric tons last year as hard-pressed consumers cut back on the quantity and quality of the tea they drank, he said.

Immediately after ruble devaluation in August 1998, India saw a surge in Russian buying as a rupee-ruble trade deal between the two countries gave India an advantage over other suppliers both in terms of pricing and availability of cash.
