EU Music Protected

BRUSSELS, Belgium -- Russia has agreed to extend copyright protection to European sound recordings made before 1995, helping to shield rock classics by the Beatles or the Rolling Stones from illegal copying, the European Union said Monday.

Until now, Russian sound recordings made as long ago as 1943 have enjoyed copyright protection, but only European recordings produced since 1995 have had the same guarantee, the EU's executive commission said in a statement.

Russia has undertaken to amend its legislation on copyright and trademarks to comply with international standards following an agreement with the EU, the commission said.
