Chaika on Prisons

MOSCOW -- Russia's justice minister criticized his own prison system Thursday, saying tens of thousands of people were kept in tiny cells for unacceptably long periods awaiting trial, Interfax said.

It quoted Yury Chaika as saying he recently discussed the problems of the prison system with Prime Minister Vladimir Putin, including the fact that 97,000 prisoners had tuberculosis.

"The prime minister is taking the reform of the criminal justice system under his personal control," the agency quoted Chaika as saying.

He said the criminal justice system was only receiving 60 percent of the funds it needed.
