Bombers Pay Gas Debts

MOSCOW -- The Russian air force said Tuesday that Moscow has agreed to allow Ukraine to pay some of its multi-million-dollar energy debts by handing over 11 strategic bombers that once carried Soviet nuclear weapons.

Ukraine has repeatedly tried to offload the bombers since the Soviet Union collapsed in 1991, but talks until now foundered because of differences over the price tag and other conditions. The energy debt remains a major irritant in bilateral relations.

Russian air force spokesman Nikolai Baranov confirmed a brief report on the deal in Tuesday's edition of the Defense Ministry newspaper Krasnaya Zvezda.
