Armenia Mourns

YEREVAN, Armenia -- Black-ribboned flags flew at half-mast across Armenia on Friday as the country began three days of mourning for Prime Minister Vazgen Sarkisyan and seven other officials and legislators killed by nationalist gunmen Wednesday.

Newspapers Friday framed portraits of the victims in black, while Catholicos Garegin II, the new head of the Armenian Apostolic Church, called on thenation to "condemn the godless action and consolidate around the president."

U.S. Deputy Secretary of State Strobe Talbott, who discussed Nagorny Karabakh with Armenian officials Wednesday shortly before the murders, returned to Armenia on Friday to offer U.S. help to the government as it copes with the tragedy.
