SUAL Output Grows

MOSCOW -- Russia's fourth biggest aluminum producer, the Siberian-Ural Aluminum company, produced 337,999 tons of primary aluminum last year, up from 331,028 tons in 1997, the company said in a statement Friday.

Of this, Irkutsk aluminum smelter accounted for 256,980 tons (252,201 tons in 1997) and Ural smelter for 81,019 tons (78,827 tons in 1997), it said.

In December, SUAL President Viktor Vekselberg said the company had no plans to increase aluminum output in 1999, but wanted to become self-sufficient in alumina, an intermediate product for aluminum smelting extracted from bauxite.

SUAL produced 565,674 tons of alumina last year, down from the previous year's 582,199 tons but needed around 650,000 tons for self-sufficiency.
