Russia Urged on Pasko

PARIS -- The international press freedom watchdog Reporters Without Borders on Wednesday urged Russia to release a naval journalist charged with treason, saying he was protected by a European convention.

Pacific Fleet Captain Grigory Pasko, who also edited a local military newspaper and worked part time for a Japanese television channel, is to go on trial behind closed doors in a military court in Vladivostok on Thursday.

Reporters Without Borders said that, as a journalist, he was protected by the European Convention of Human Rights, which protects freedom of expression and which Russia has signed.
