Ocalan Said Not Here

MOSCOW -- A Kurdish organization in Moscow with ties to the Kurdistan Workers' Party, or PKK, of Abdullah Ocalan said Thursday that the fugitive separatist leader was not in Russia and had made no new application for asylum here.

Merabi Shamoyev, assistant to the chairman of the Front for National Liberation of Kurdistan in Moscow, said Ocalan had applied for asylum in Russia last October before leaving for Rome, but had not applied again as some media reports had suggested.

Shamoyev said Ocalan had received no answer to the earlier request.

Ocalan left Rome last week after Italian authorities said they would not turn him over to Turkey for prosecution. Media reports have said he may have flown to Moscow.

Russia has denied any knowledge that Ocalan is now on its territory, although similar denials last year proved to be untrue.
