New Food Aid Request

MOSCOW -- Russia is planning to ask the United States for aid in maize seeds and vegetables on top of a food aid package of 3.1 millon tons agreed last year, Food and Agriculture Minister Viktor Semyonov said Thursday.

He said at a news conference this issue would be discussed during the visit of U.S. Agriculture Secretary Dan Glickman, expected in Moscow on Sunday. He declined to give the volumes of the seed and vegetable request.

Semyonov denied Russia could make a new food aid request to the United States, which is planning aid deliveries worth some $885 million.
