Nazi Trial Adjourned

VILNIUS, Lithuania -- Lithuania's second Nazi-era war crimes trial opened Tuesday but was swiftly adjourned when the 90-year-old defendant failed to appear due to what his defense said was ill health.

Kazys Gimzhauskas, a former Florida resident who returned to his native Lithuania in 1993, is accused of handing over five Jews to Nazi death squads when he was an official in the Vilnius region security police during Germany's World War II occupation of the Baltic state.

The defense told the court Gimzhauskas was bedridden and could not attend the trial. Prosecutors called for an independent medical analysis.
