Mir Crew Cleared

MOSCOW -- Doctors on Friday cleared the next crew for the flight on the Mir space station, Itar-Tass reported.

Cosmonaut Viktor Afanasyev, French astronaut Jean-Pierre Heignere and Slovak Ivan Bella are scheduled to blast off to Mir on Feb. 20 from the Baikonur Cosmodrome in the former Soviet republic of Kazakhstan.

After a 10-day stint on Mir, Bella will return to Earth with Mir's current commander Gennady Padalka. Padalka's crewmate Sergei Avdeyev will stay aboard with Afanasyev and Heignere through the summer.

The exact date for their return hasn't been set yet, and will depend on when Mir is decommissioned, Itar-Tass said.
