Mideast Peace Pledge

MOSCOW -- Prime Minister Yevgeny Primakov told the Israeli foreign minister on Thursday that Moscow is ready to make strong efforts to assist peace efforts in the Middle East.

At the start of talks with Foreign Minister Ariel Sharon, Primakov said Russia wants improved relations with Israel. Sharon replied that Russia is still a major power with an important world role to play.

"Russia is always ready for cooperation with all interested parties," Primakov said.

The two men discussed the Palestinian issue and the prospect for Israel to resume talks with Syria and Lebanon, Russian officials said.
