Kiev Lawmakers Brawl

KIEV -- Ukraine's parliament, racked by bickering between communists and nationalists, deepened its split when deputies from the two groups came to blows over whether to join a Moscow-dominated grouping.

Dozens of angry Communist deputies rushed to the parliamentary rostrum, throwing punches at colleagues from the Rukh nationalist faction who had blocked the area during a vote Thursday on a proposal for membership in the Interparliamentary Assembly of the Commonwealth of Independent States.

The brief clash increased in intensity after an electronic display in the legislature indicated the draft motion had been rejected.
