Grozny Minister Attack

GROZNY -- A top security official in Russia's breakaway Chechnya region said he survived an assassination attempt Thursday.

Aslanbek Arsayev, the separatist region's national security minister, said an explosive device had gone off near his car as he drove to his office from home, but that he had escaped with only "slight shock."

Chechnya has remained unstable since Russia withdrew its troops after the 1994-96 independence war. The region's president, Aslan Maskhadov, survived a car-bomb attack last August.

No country has recognized Chechnya as independent, but Moscow no longer exercises control over the region.
