German GDP Grows

FRANKFURT, Germany -- Germany's gross domestic product grew 2.8 percent last year, accelerating from 1997's 2.2 percent to show the strongest growth since German unification in 1990, the Federal Statistics Office said Thursday.

The economy in western Germany, home to the bulk of German industry, expanded 2.9 percent in 1998 compared with 2.3 percent.

In eastern Germany, where unemployment is well above the national average, the economy grew 2.1 percent in 1998, an improvement from 1997's 1.7 percent.
