Gas Deal Signed

MOSCOW -- Turkmen gas is flowing again to Ukraine after a transit deal was signed over the long New Year weekend, a company involved in the agreement said Tuesday.

An official at U.S-registered Itera said the energy company had been chosen as the financial and technical operator for the delivery of Turkmen gas across Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan and Russia to the Ukrainian border.

The deal was signed by the two nations, the transit states, and the companies that will carry the gas, he said.

Itera will be paid in gas for its transit services, he added. It will then sell the gas and pay cash for renting gas pipeline space from Russian gas monopoly Gazprom, owner of the pipeline system in Russia.

Up to 20 billion cubic meters per year will be delivered to Ukraine.
