DHL Cargo Volume Up

MOSCOW -- International courier DHL said Wednesday total volume of cargo carried in Russia for 1998 was up 7 percent over last year and forecast at least similar growth in 1999.

"For all of 1998, DHL carried 7 percent more in cargo than in 1997 and, at minimum, we plan the same this year," Tikhon Yevdokimov, DHL commercial director for Russia, told reporters.

A month after Russia's latest financial crisis started last August, DHL said its cargo volumes in Russia had fallen 60 percent compared with pre-crisis levels.

But Yevdokimov said subsequent months brought steady gains and new clients such as McDonald's and Samsung Electronics.

DHL Russian country director Craig Curphey said that to attract clients the company had slashed prices from Jan. 1 on intra-country deliveries and scrapped a $50 surcharge for shipments to cities where DHL has no offices.
