Chernomyrdin to Run

MOSCOW -- Former Prime Minister Viktor Chernomyrdin has reaffirmed his intention to run for president next year despite splits in his political party and his own lack of popular support, a newspaper reported Thursday.

In an interview published in Noviye Izvestia, Chernomyrdin said he had not changed his mind about seeking the presidency, even though his popularity is low and many people believe he is partly responsible for the economic crisis.

"Everything stands as I said," he was quoted as saying.
