Central Bank Auditor

MOSCOW -- The State Duma's budget committee recommended Thursday for the third time that Russian auditing company Unicon be named the auditor for the Central Bank, Interfax reported.

The committee was supposed to consider three Western firms after Duma lawmakers rejected its previous suggestion to appoint Unicon. Interfax did not say why the committee decided to renominate the Russian company.

The Duma will vote on the recommendation Friday or Monday, Interfax said.

Unicon was selected last year to audit the Central Bank, but the bank's chief, Viktor Gerashchenko, asked the Duma to choose a Western firm instead. He said a foreign company would make the bank more credible in the eyes of the West.
