Businessman Murdered

MOSCOW -- A prominent businessman was gunned down in an apparent contract killing in the Far East, the latest in a rash of murders in the region, Itar-Tass reported Tuesday.

Alexander Perepechin, 43, was shot eight times Monday night as he arrived at his home in Khaborovsk by an unidentified gunman, Itar-Tass said. The gunman escaped after the killing, which bore the hallmarks of a gangland killing.

More than 500 killings were registered by police in the Far East region in 1998, a 5 percent increase over 1997, the report said. It did not give a precise figure of the number of killings and did not say how many were attributed to organized crime.
