Anti-Semitism Pledge

MOSCOW -- Russia pledged Wednesday to stem a tide of anti-Semitism and said the problem should not cloud its growing ties with Israel.

The two countries' foreign ministers, meeting in Moscow, also discussed security issues including nonproliferation of nuclear weapons in the Middle East.

"Minister Ariel Sharon expressed concern during our talks about the manifestation of anti-Semitism in our country over recent months," Igor Ivanov said at a news conference.

"The position of the Russian government is clear and unambiguous. ... We live in a multinational state and any insults or infringements of rights on ethnic or national grounds are impermissible," the foreign minister said.

Ivanov said the government was stepping up its fight against all forms of political extremism.
