4 Held for Lenin Theft

MOSCOW -- Russian police have arrested four men accused of stealing a massive bronze bust of Lenin on New Year's Eve, Itar-Tass reported Thursday.

The four allegedly dismantled a 350-kilogram bust of the Soviet founder in the resort town of Anapa on the Black Sea, then buried the bits in a beach. They later dug them up and towed them away in a truck, a police report said.

The thieves then sawed the bust into small pieces and sold the bronze to a scrap metal dealer, the news agency reported.

Statue-napping has become a thriving mini-industry as thieves resell the valuable metals used in the Soviet-era to erect monuments to Communist heroes.
