Tajik Guards Shot

DUSHANBE, Tajikistan -- Two young soldiers were shot close to the southern border of the former Soviet republic of Tajikistan and died from their wounds, a guard spokesman said Thursday.

A group of border guards had just been replaced and were travelling north when unidentified assailants opened fire late Wednesday about one kilometer away from the Tajik-Afghan frontier.

Shukhrat Rakhmonov, 27, and Davlyat Zainuddinov, 19, both Tajik citizens working for the Russian forces which patrol Tajikistan's borders, were hit and later died.
