Police in Dagestan Seize Oppositionist

MAKHACHKALA, Dagestan -- Heavily-armed police intercepted a car Wednesday and seized opposition leader Magomed Khachilayev, who was wanted for storming a government building this spring.

A stun device, which produces a loud blast but causes little damage, was detonated on a road in central Makhachkala, forcing Khachilayev's car to stop. Police with automatic rifles then seized Khachilayev, said officers who took part in the operation. Khachilayev's brother, Nadirshakh, was in the car but managed to escape, police said.

Late Wednesday, hundreds of people had gathered outside government building to protest the arrest, Itar-Tass reported. Police went on high alert, and have sealed off the center city to prevent violence, the report said.

Both Nadirshakh Khachilayev -- a member of the Russian parliament and head of Russia's Muslim Union -- and Magomed Khachilayev, who heads a group representing an ethnic minority in Dagestan, the Laks, are accused of organizing an attack on a government building in Makhachkala last May.
